  • Build strong relationships with world-renowned researchers from a university ranked in the world’s top 50
  • Identify and champion new technologies with the potential to create commercially valuable intellectual property

About the Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) Opportunity:

The University of Queensland (UQ) led Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA) is a $160 million initiative supported by a $50 million Trailblazer grant from the Australian Government over four years, backed by industry and innovation partners, along with Queensland University of Technology (QUT), the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), CSIRO and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. UQ, industry partners and UQ’s research collaborators will invest $110 million funding in the project to boost growth and innovation in the sector. The initiative aims to contribute to doubling the value of Australia’s food and beverage manufacturing sector by 2030, through a focus on smart production and new ingredients, creating innovative foods and beverages, generating thousands of new jobs.

UniQuest is the commercialisation company of The University of Queensland and is leading the commercialisation activities for the initiative.

The Commercialisation and Business Development Manager will be an integral part of this exciting initiative.  You will build new partnerships and commercialisation opportunities with industry and research partners leading to short, medium and long-term objectives aligned with the FaBA initiative. This will involve the creation, negotiation and delivery of commercial opportunities including licences and start-up companies based in IP from research outcomes.

The successful incumbent will also provide support to build a broader ecosystem of industry engagement, workforce development and commercialisation associated with the food and beverage sector both in Queensland and nationally, catalysed by FaBA. The role will work closely with the FaBA Management Team and the FaBA program partners and project leaders.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Implement innovative IP strategies and structures to facilitate business and industry engagement
  • Find and close opportunities for licencing and formation of new start-ups to support the FaBA initiative and broader food and beverage ecosystem
  • Understand and translate the strategic aims, research outcomes and activities within FaBA aligned with key industry and research strategies
  • Collaborate and build relationships with industry and research partners to achieve FaBA objectives in IP management and commercialisation
  • Identify food and beverage commercialisation opportunities from UQ research to feed into the strong pipeline of projects and secure sources of funding and investment for UQ start-up companies
  • Work closely with UQ’s commercial management and partnership teams to provide advice related to IP management and commercialisation.

About You:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a field relevant to the position, preferably to post-graduate level, with strong technical and scientific competency
  • International and local contacts/business networks in the food and beverage industry
  • Knowledge and practice of commercialisation pathways including licences and start-ups for related portfolio
  • Demonstrated deal track record (licences and/or start-up companies)
  • Experience of identifying and cultivating new industry partnerships
  • Demonstrated skills in managing and influencing multi-stakeholder, complex projects and achieving outcomes to deadlines.

This is a fixed term contract for up to 4 years and the role is based at UniQuest’s offices on The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Join UniQuest as an Intellectual Property Management Director and you will:

  • Provide expert advice to the UniQuest IP Commercialisation (IPCom) team with respect to strategies for the establishment and exploitation of intellectual property (IP) rights in the context of commercialisation and engagement initiatives;
  • Support the UniQuest IPCom team in managing its IP portfolio, through the establishment and ongoing utilisation of IP systems;
  • Manage processes for effective communication between external patent counsel, researchers, industry partners and UniQuest;
  • Build and maintain strong effective relationships with external counsel and IP service providers;
  • Participate and lead in patent prosecution in circumstances where the IP issues become complex, ensuring UniQuest is obtaining appropriate IP protection to support commercialisation activities;
  • Play an active part in raising the awareness and enhancing the skills of the UniQuest IPCom team in identifying, protecting and recognising the potential of UQ’s IP.

The successful candidate will hold registration as a Trans-Tasman Patent Attorney with a background in life sciences. They will be highly motivated, have a diligent and keen sense of organisation and have excellent client services skills.

Biography

Professor Mark Blows received his PhD in Genetics from La Trobe University in 1994. He subsequently held an NSERC International Fellowship at York University and an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship at James Cook University, before joining the University of Queensland in 1998, and subsequently was awarded two further ARC Fellowships. His major interests are in statistical genetics, with a particular focus on how genetic variance evolves, the distribution of genetic variance in high-dimensional phenotypes, and how genetic variation limits evolutionary change. In 2011, he was elected to the Australian Academy of Science.  After serving for 7 years as the Head of the School of Biological Sciences, Professor Blows was Pro-Vice Chancellor Research for the past 4 years, and is currently acting Deputy-Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation).

Biography

Professor Edwina Cornish spent 11 years in various leadership roles in an Australian biotech company, Calgene Pacific (later named Florigene) before becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Adelaide. In 2004, Professor Cornish joined Monash as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and then in 2012, she was appointed Monash’s inaugural Provost and Senior Vice-President; a position she held until her retirement in 2016. Professor Cornish has extensive experience working at the interface between government, research, industry and the higher education sector. She is currently a member of a number of Boards including CSIRO.
