Experienced venture capitalist, innovation and entrepreneurship advisor Anne-Marie Birkill has joined the UniQuest Board of Directors.

Ms Birkill brings more than 35 years of experience in executive leadership, product development and commercialisation, mentorship, capital raising and exits to the role and is passionate about growing Australia’s knowledge-based economy.

She is a co-founder, Venture Partner and executive director for OneVentures, a $600 million venture capital firm that invests in technology companies with global potential.

Ms Birkill said UniQuest’s track record in bridging the IP-to-product gap was outstanding and she was looking forward to being part of the team.

“Australia’s wealth of intellectual property is a testament to our brilliant minds but the gap between groundbreaking ideas and their translation into tangible products and services remains a hurdle,” she said.

“Addressing this challenge is where my passion lies.

“As a former UniQuest employee, a UQ graduate, an investor in UQ startups and an active member of the UQ community over the course of the past 25 years, this is a satisfying, full-circle opportunity for me.

“I’m honoured to have been invited to join UniQuest’s board at this exciting time.”

UniQuest board Chairman John Grant said he was thrilled by Ms Birkill’s appointment.

“Anne-Marie brings broad experience to UniQuest as a non-executive director, but the Board looks forward, in particular, to drawing on her deep domain experience in venture and innovation at a time when UniQuest is seeking to stretch as an organisation,” he said.

Prior to founding OneVentures, Ms Birkill’s roles included CEO for the i.Lab Incubator Pty Ltd and five years as a member of the senior management team at UniQuest.

She currently holds several board and advisory roles including acting as a non-executive director for corporate advisory firm InterFinancial and ASX-listed PPK Group and is Chair of the Investment Committee for the $160 million UQ-led Food and Beverage Accelerator (FaBA).

Ms Birkill is an active participant in the innovation community and is a gifted and enthusiastic mentor for other women working in the science, entrepreneurial and finance sectors.

UniQuest is the commercialisation company of The University of Queensland.
