The Director, Commercialisation is the key link between The University of Queensland’s (UQ’s) world-renowned research staff and industry and investment organisations looking for commercial opportunities. Currently, UniQuest is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced individual to support the commercialisation of intellectual property from the physical sciences portfolio.


Key responsibilities include:

Reporting to the Senior Director and Head of Physical Sciences, the role’s key accountabilities include:

  • Developing strong effective relationships with UQ researchers to identify potential opportunities to commercialise IP;
  • Formulating commercial proposals to drive improved commercial outcomes;
  • Attracting and networking with potential key investors and industry stakeholders;
  • Structuring, negotiating and closing commercial arrangements to maximise value for the organisation;
  • Managing and maintaining a portfolio of qualified projects;
  • Ensuring greater understanding of commercial process amongst the UQ research community.

Critical to this work, the candidate will preferably have a demonstrated understanding of university research management and university funding systems, as well as proven ability to build relationships across a large research community.

Considerable experience in technology and IP commercialisation (ideally ICT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, cyber security, electrical engineering, or robotics), with demonstrated ability to drive commercial activity in this environment and deliver outcomes is essential. Effective as a relationship builder, with a collaborative approach to operating in a high performing culture, you have sound knowledge or a strong appreciation of the university environment. Tertiary qualifications in a field aligned to the study of Physical Sciences (ideally electrical engineering or computer science) is essential.

The ideal candidate will have enthusiasm for deal-making, IP commercialisation and attraction of venture capital. You will also combine a strong curiosity about new, early stage technologies with a critical review and have a desire to convert these technologies into commercial solutions for industry problems. Critical to your success will be your ability to manage and influence multi-stakeholder complex projects and achieve outcomes against concurrent deadlines.
