Developed and validated at UQ, ‘The Islands’ simulation solves problems, delivers engagement and improves learning experiences for any courses involving statistics, data, and experimentation.

Teaching and learning statistics is hard. Abstract concepts can be difficult to understand and it is tough to engage students. Traditional teaching methods using textbooks or e-books simply don’t cut it, and higher education knows it.

Experimentation provides experiential learning and overcomes these challenges. However, implementing experimentation within courses creates logistical and ethical challenges: data collection is slow, impractical in large classes and unethical or impossible in many contexts such as health sciences – students cannot inject classmates with pathogens!

So, how can higher education instructors effectively teach statistics?
