Supporting UQ’s goal to double industry-derived research by 2020

UniQuest is preparing to present UQ’s capabilities in the area of soft colloid, particulates and their applications to Procter & Gamble (P&G) who is known to fund collaborative R&D and innovations. Given UQ’s target to double industry-funded research by 2020, Professor Anton Middelberg, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) will host an information session for researchers on Monday 3rd November 2014.

Why P&G?

  • P&G is in the top 50 of the Fortune 500 and spends around $2.0 billion per annum on R&D across 150 science areas
  • 40% of partners have multiple deals with P&G - so it is worth looking to build a partnership
  • P&G have an open innovation office in China. Their Director of Open Innovation has visited Sydney and Melbourne but not Brisbane. Upon hearing this, UniQuest has initiated communication with the Director and hence this opportunity to short-list relevant UQ research expertise and innovations
  • In 2013, P&G and Tianjin University established a collaborative innovation research program and a 5 year Master Research collaboration agreement with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology & Research
  • In the past P&G collaborated with the University of Adelaide to translate wool-fibre management technology into hair-care products
  • From InCites data, P&G have co-published with UQ researchers since 2004 in subjects ranging from medicinal chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, biochemical research methods, endocrinology and metabolism, pharmacology & pharmacy (in relation to dermal absorption of the skin, P&G do not have an interest in drug development)



The program will include presentations by the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Anton Middelberg, UQ Innovation Champion Professor Paul Meredith and UniQuest.  Professor Paul Meredith, who is a past-employee of P&G and A/Professor Jason Stokes who has successful collaborations with PepsiCo, a company with similar open innovation cultures, will briefly touch on how to articulate potential connections with P&G’s needs in relation to research capabilities.  This advice will help to increase your chances of funding success if you choose to prepare a brief descriptor of what you have to offer relative to P&G’s needs.
