The Company

UniQuest is the main commercialisation company of The University of Queensland (UQ), specialising in the commercialisation of intellectual property, research outcomes and expertise. UniQuest has a 30 year track record and was responsible for the commercialisation of the HPV vaccine Gardasil®, the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, the image correction technology found in two-thirds of the world's MRI machines, and Spinifex Pharmaceuticals, one of Australia's largest biotech acquisitions.

With the support of the Queensland State Government and UQ, UniQuest has established the Queensland Emory Drug Discovery Initiative (QEDDI), a new dedicated small molecule drug discovery and development capability.  QEDDI aims to develop innovative discoveries into small molecule drug candidates that could progress towards clinical development through industry partnerships or investment in a spin-out company.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Biology, the Biologist will perform biology and screening research and development for QEDDI’s small molecule drug discovery programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participates as part of a project team by developing, validating and conducting the relevant in vitro biochemical, cell-based and biophysical assays in support of defined project objectives and agreed timelines
  • Demonstrates command of a variety of techniques and tools required for their assigned responsibilities within the given project
  • Uses scientific knowledge to resolve research problems with some assistance from line manager or other team members to meet internal and project deadlines
  • Prepares reports of findings, presents data, and collaborates with other scientists
  • Presents own work at project technical meetings and project work at department technical meetings when required
  • Keeps abreast of the scientific literature relevant to the project

To be successful in your application, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • PhD, MSc or BSc Hons (2+ years relevant experience) in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology or a related discipline.
  • A scientist with hands-on experience in a wide range of in vitro biological techniques in biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology or a related discipline.
  • Ability to develop, validate and perform relevant in vitro assays and systems for compound evaluation across a range of assay modalities at industry standard (desirable).
  • Ability to maintain accurate, up to date laboratory records and work to commercial standards in the laboratory including data integrity
  • Good understanding of the in vitro biology
  • Relevant industrial experience is highly desirable

This is a great opportunity to be part of a new drug-discovery led initiative that will seek to translate university-based biology into small molecule drug candidates for commercialisation, bringing value to industry, to UQ and to all of Queensland.
